Age of Empires II HD received mixed reviews and as of December 2013 has an aggregate score of 68/100 on Metacritic. Critics agreed that the HD edition changed very little from the original game. Daniel Starkey of Destructoid lamented this fact, saying that "the number of changes that have been made here are the absolute bare minimum. There are no HD textures, all of the original sound effects and voice clips have been kept, and none of the mechanics have changed". However, he added that the reluctance to change the game features encourages "a much more aggressive, and obsessive style of play". Age of Empires II HD is a remake of Age of Empires II that was released for PC through Steam on April 9, 2013. The game was developed by Hidden Path Entertainment and Ensemble Studios and was published by Microsoft Game Studios.

Age of Empires II HD received mixed reviews and as of December 2013 has an aggregate score of 68/100 on Metacritic. Critics agreed that the HD edition changed very little from the original game. Daniel Starkey of Destructoid lamented this fact, saying that "the number of changes that have been made here are the absolute bare minimum. There are no HD textures, all of the original sound effects and voice clips have been kept, and none of the mechanics have changed". However, he added that the reluctance to change the game features encourages "a much more aggressive, and obsessive style of play".
